What is Civil War Fake Busters?

Civil War Fake Busters is a loosely organized group of Civil War artifacts collectors, dealers, authors, and experts. Our mission is twofold: First, we patrol the CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL PERIOD categories of e-bay and pick out auctions that are trying to deceive unsuspecting buyers by offering fake, fantasy, or misrepresented Civil War relics. Second, we try to share our collective knowledge and educate each other and the general public on how to spot fake relics. We believe that the sharing of information is the key to making relic collecting both fun and rewarding.

This website is the collaborative work of many dedicated men and women, and it has evolved over five years into a relevant force in the ongoing battle against those that would use history as a crowbar to break in and steal from the unwary. We work with representatives from e-bay to try to have as many fraudulent auctions removed from that site as possible. Our progress has been better than any of us could have ever hoped and we have succeeded in making the CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL PERIOD categories safer to shop in.

We hope that you will find this site useful and educational and we encourage you to post any questions you might have so that some of our members can attempt to assist you. We are not perfect, and we will make mistakes, but the collective knowledge we possess here is as great as any source you will find as a collector on the Internet. Feel free to use all of our open recourses as much as you wish. Thank you for stopping by and we hope you will return often.

Our Community Center Forums

There are two forums in the community center. An "Open" forum and a "Members-Only" forum. The "open" forum is a public forum for discussing Civil War artifacts or for discussing the Civil War in general. You must register to use this forum. More information about this forum can be found in the "Community Announcements" post in the community center.

The "Members-Only" forum is just that. It is for Civil War Fake Buster's members to discuss and recommend to eBay the possible removal of fake Civil War items currently being auctioned.

How does one become a member?

The initial membership is contrived of folks that have been helping in this effort for some time now. They have been unselfishly dedicating their knowledge and free time to help unknowing collectors and dealers from being scammed. Of course, we are always looking for new members to join us. To become a member, one has to be invited by a current member. If you haven't been invited but are interested in becoming a member, please send us an email telling us about yourself and why you think you can help us in our continuing efforts to help protect the public. We will respond to your request as quickly as possible but please remember that most of us have full time jobs.
